Optimal Power-Delay Tradeoffs in Fading Channels - Small-Delay Asymptotics

چکیده
When transmitting stochastically arriving data over fading channels there is an inherent trade-off between the required average transmission power and the average queueing delay experienced by the data. This trade-off can be exploited by appropriately scheduling the transmission of data over time. In this paper, we study the behavior of the optimal power-delay trade-off for a single user in the regime of asymptotically small delays. In this regime, we first lower bound how much average power is required as a function of the average queueing delay. We show that the rate at which this bound increases as the delay becomes asymptotically small depends on the behavior of the fading distribution near zero, as well as the arrival statistics. We characterize this rate for two different classes of fading distributions, one class that requires infinite power to minimize the queueing delay and one class that requires only finite power. We then show that for both classes, this rate can essentially be achieved by a sequence of simple “channel threshold” policies, which only transmit when the channel gain is greater than a given threshold. We also consider several other transmission scheduling policies and characterize their convergence behavior in the small delay regime. This work was supported in part by NSF CAREER award CCR-0238382. Optimal Power/delay Trade-offs in Wireless Communications – Small Delay Asymptotics
In this paper we consider the optimal trade-off between average transmission power and average queueing delay for a single user transmitting data over a wireless fading channel. In particular we study the behavior of this trade-off in the regime of asymptotically large power and small delay. Our focus is on channels which require infinite power to minimize the average delay. For such channels, ...
متن کاملPower and Delay Optimal Transmission Scheduling: Small Delay Asymptotics
For wireless data traffic, energy efficiency can be improved by adapting the transmission power and rate over time based on the offered traffic as well as any channel state information. In this context, a variety of transmission scheduling approaches have been studied including [1, 2, 3]. These approaches attempt to manage the fundamental trade-off between packet delay and transmission power or...
متن کاملCommunication over fading channels with delay constraints
We consider a user communicating over a fading channel with perfect channel state information. Data is assumed to arrive from some higher layer application and is stored in a buffer until it is transmitted. We study adapting the user’s transmission rate and power based on the channel state information as well as the buffer occupancy; the objectives are to regulate both the long-term average tra...
متن کاملQueue length aware power control for delay- constrained communication over fading channels
In this paper, we study efficient power control schemes for delay sensitive communication over fading channels. Our objective is to find a power control law that optimizes the link layer performance, specifically, minimizes the packet drop probability, subject to a long-term average power constraint. We assume the buffer at the transmitter is finite; hence packet drop happens when the buffer is...
متن کاملMultiaccess Fading Channels-Part II: Delay-Limited Capacities
In multiaccess wireless systems, dynamic allocation of resources such as transmit power, bandwidths, and rates is an important means to deal with the time-varying nature of the environment. In this two-part paper, we consider the problem of optimal resource allocation from an information-theoretic point of view. We focus on the multiaccess fading channel with Gaussian noise, and define two noti...
